The district of Punda is one of the most vibrant and historically rich neighborhoods in Willemstad. Once under Spanish control, the Dutch were able to claim the area for their own and establish the city with the construction of Fort Amsterdam. Now, the pedestrian-only district is home to the Handelskade, a colorfully iconic waterfront strip lined with cafes, stores, and Dutch-influenced architecture, the Queen Emma Bridge, a unique pontoon bridge that connects Punda and Otrobanda, and an energy that welcomes all.
A FEW THINGS TO DO IN PUNDA:
• Markets.
Check out the Floating Market for fruits and veggies, Plasa Bieu for local bites, or Marshe Nobo for all-around shopping.
• Synagogue and Museums.
Visit the Jewish Museum, Fort Church, and Postal Museum for a peek into the past.
• Punda Vibes.
Every Thursday night from 6-10pm, the district turns into an upbeat gathering filled with street theatre, live music, local art, craft markets, and a fireworks show over St. Anna Bay.
