Tourists wandering on the sandy beaches of the Avila Beach Hotel in Curaçao are struck by the sight of an unusual octagonal two-story building, with a shingled cupola, freshly painted bright yellow.
This quaint-looking house has an unexpected historic significance; it was in this building that the Venezuelan “Libertador,” the famous Simón Bolívar, spent time before he set out to assemble the forces that eventually put an end to Spanish colonial rule in South America.
Today the “Octagon” serves as a small museum in memory of Curaçao's connection to Simón Bolívar. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 pm, and by appointment. The romantic setting combined with the historic ambiance makes the Octagon the perfect location for elegant wedding receptions, special meetings, small concerts, and poetry readings.
