When VJ made her first trip to Curaçao there was a lot going on in her life and she was definitely in need of some zen. After the passing of her mom and aunt and having just turned 40, she decided she needed a little Curaçao.
"I had been to 75 percent of the Caribbean, and even had a favorite island, but just decided Curaçao was going to be it. And once I was there it was so peaceful that I went back for two months not long after that."
For VJ, meeting new people and getting around was all part of the trip. "I made friends with the first person I met … she was a waitress, I ate at her restaurant a few times and we had good conversations, so we became friends. I'm still in touch with her. She's like, "when are you coming back? Hurry up!’"
Taking the trip in stride was more of VJ's speed but she appreciated that there was a change of pace if you wanted. "There’s a mix of everything, if you want to relax, if you want to have some fun, explore nature – my friend is a bit of an adventurer. So, that's why he loved hiking Mt. Christoffel and doing yoga on the beach in the morning. So there's a little something for everyone."
"Curaçao is just a little more peaceful than some other islands. And Playa Porto Marie is one of my favorite beaches. That, and Cas Abao, if you go to either one, they both have soft, white sand – it's just beautiful."
I stayed in Grote Burg, which is near the airport – toward the west side of the island. I liked the neighborhood. I liked it so much it's the neighborhood I'm trying to move to.
VJ plans to relocate to Curaçao May 2019. We wish her luck in the next chapter of her life. And regardless of whether her island adventure is a permanent one, she finally seems to have found some peace.
