Growing up in Curaçao, Angela Guiamo only wanted to live her passion. “My life was never about cooking,” she says now, less than a year after opening Fleur de Marie Eatery, a farm-to-table restaurant, cooking school and wellness shop in Scharloo.
“Cooking just came naturally. I studied in Holland and people always came to me when I had something on the stove. I majored in communications and marketing – and I did that. But now we have Fleur de Marie, and I’m loving every day.” “Fleur de Marie Eatery started as an idea, as a dream that I had the privilege to share with a very dear friend. And it was a dream that became reality.”
We like to connect local food. I call it going back to grandmother’s kitchen. All the traditional food that’s been created over the years, we bring it to you with a new twist. So for one example, past generations didn’t know how to cook with microgreens. They had other ingredients – but we make those kinds of additions and changes that we think they might have made if they could.
I’ve learned over the years that food is very personal and private, and we do it in a very open way. For me the signature dish is Kabritu Stobá (goat stew). I could eat it every day.
Scharloo is what I call the Renaissance area of the island. It’s reviving itself again. It’s very colorful. It’s a mixture of big mansions and smaller houses, and it’s just happy – it gives you a happy vibe. It’s also becoming the artsy neighborhood of Curaçao; a lot of local artists reside here and show their art here.
The island has become more popular. More and more people are discovering our island, so you have more offerings. You have more hotels and different restaurants with local food. We’re also honoring our local traditions more, and that’s beautiful to see in the tourism.
I’d like to change the perception that Curaçao is like all the other islands in the Caribbean. Every island is unique but Curaçao is definitely different. It has a different flavor. It has a different sound. So even if you’ve been to many islands on a cruise, Curaçao is still a unique place to visit.
