Curaçao, the tropical paradise, offers a unique blend of festive charm and warm Caribbean vibes during the holiday season. Whether you're looking for cultural experiences or lively celebrations, the island has something for everyone. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best things to do in Curaçao during the holidays.
The city center transforms into a holiday wonderland during December. The historic Punda district is adorned with dazzling lights and decorations, creating the perfect festive atmosphere.
On Thursday evenings from 18:00 to 22:00, enjoy live music, dance shows, shop for unique holiday gifts, savor delicious treats at local markets and enjoy the stunning firework show at 20:15!
The holiday season brings a special charm to Curaçao’s markets. Visit the markets for fresh produce, unique souvenirs, local holiday delicacies, and holiday-themed crafts accompanied by live performances and dance shows.
A few of this year’s Christmas markets:
Marshe Lokal at Landhuis Daniel on December 8th
Pietermaai Christmas Fair on December 6th and 7th
Christmas Fair at Kura Hulanda Village on December 21st and 22nd.
No trip to Curaçao is complete without trying traditional holiday dishes. Indulge in ayaka (meat-filled tamales wrapped in banana leaves), keshi yená (stuffed cheese), and bolo di kashupete (cashew nut cake). Pair your meal with a glass of local ponche crema; a creamy, spiced holiday drink.
A fun way to enjoy these traditions will be by joining a local family or friend, but most local restaurants and even hotel Christmas buffets, will include all of this deliciousness on their menu.
As seen in Hallmark Movies, haha, but the tropical way. Be Santa for a day during this fun-filled and festive run on December 21st starting at Riffort Village and ending at Madero Beach Club in a celebratory way, while you're being cheered on. Cross the iconic ‘Swinging Old Lady’ pontoon bridge that will be beautifully lit during the Holidays, pass by the famous ‘CURAÇAO’ sign in Punda and make your way through colorful Pietermaai until you reach the party scene for a deserving drink afterwards! Find more information HERE and watch a recap of last year’s edition.
Join the locals on New Year’s Eve for Curaçao’s thrilling tradition of lighting pagaras - long strings of firecrackers. This event is more than a celebration; it’s a symbolic way to chase away bad spirits and welcome the New Year with joy and positivity. The biggest firecracker event will take place in the Pietermaai neighborhood on December 31st starting in the early afternoon. The Pietermaai streets will be filled with DJ’s, live bands, food stalls, specialty bars and more. Have your sunglasses, sunscreen, hat and ear plugs for the kids in check. Follow Pietermaai District Curacao’s Facebook page for details on all Holiday festivities.
Pack your cooler, gather your travel party and get ready to enjoy amazing fireworks show as of December 27th until New Year’s Eve. These shows are free public events, thus be on time as they will be very crowded, but I assure you the vibes are unmatched.
Celebrate the start of a new year with Curaçao’s spectacular fireworks displays. Some of the best viewing spots include Brionplein Otrabanda and Handelskade Punda for the public New Year’s Eve celebration and fireworks show among friendly locals. Beach clubs at Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach Boulevard are also great locations. The energetic atmosphere is infectious and makes for an unforgettable New Year’s celebration.
Insider tip: Find a New Year’s Eve boat trip to the Spanish Waters and enjoy the hours-long fireworks show of the mansion’s owners that will leave you in awe.
Curaçao combines the warmth of the Caribbean with the magic of the holiday season, offering a truly unique experience, concluded by many as a top holiday destination.
