How necessary is insect repellent on the island?
Mosquitos are a nuisance but they can also carry diseases, so it's best to avoid getting stung altogether.
Mosquitos are most active around dusk and dawn and you'll see more than usual a day or two after rainfall. The use of repellents is one of the most effective ways to protect your family against mosquitoes. Use it on all exposed parts of the body.
Choose a repellent containing the active ingredient DEET. Products containing Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or IR3535 are also effective. You can use a product containing 20% to 25% DEET which will protect you for 6 to 8 hours. Always adhere to the usage guidelines provided on the product label, particularly when applying it on children. To prevent ingestion or eye irritation, avoid applying repellent on children's hands. If you are also using sun protection, apply it first, followed by the insect repellent. Repellants are available in all supermarkets and drugstores.
